Caucasian Chalk Circle
Promethean Theatre Ensemble
By Bertholt Brecht
Role: Ensemble
When a servant girl becomes the less-than-willing guardian to the infant of her wealthy mistress during a revolution, great consequences hang upon her smallest choices. Bertolt Brecht spun a tale of a long-ago and faraway land where the Haves lorded it over the Have-nots, and justice seemed reserved only for the rich. It’s funny how little things have changed in the here and now.
about the project
high-energy ensemble
Promethean’s production of Caucasian Chalk Circle was a huge undertaking – original music, instruments on stage, puppets! – but it helped showcase some of the great talent and DIY spirit of storefront theatre. I tested my sightreading skills in rehearsal a few nights (I didn’t quite fail, but I would give myself a D+ at best) and remembered how fun it was to sing in a large group. With a 16-person cast, the play just felt massive, with so many scenes, props, and instruments. But in the end, we rallied around Grusha to tell her story, and it was both delightful and heartbreaking.
