Bury The Dead

Promethean Theatre Ensemble

By Irwin Shaw

Roles: Martha Webster/NPR Voice/Soldier
On a battlefield in the second year of the war that is to begin tomorrow night, six dead soldiers killed in action inexplicably stand up and refuse to be buried in their graves. The response from the military, the public and the soldiers’ families is by turns horrific and heartbreaking.

about the project

macro to micro

Before we started the rehearsal process, director Beth Wolf convened the cast and crew to watch the documentary “Restrepo“, a sobering window into the world we were about to portray on stage. Almost all of the cast portrayed a soldier of some kind on stage in Act 1, where the world reacted to the six dead soldiers who refused to lie down in their graves. In Act 2, the lens narrowed to 2-person scenes with each soldier and a loved one, heartwrenching reminders of the ripple effect of war. This cast became close. We supported each other through the work and the emotions that came after each scene was done. In terms of connection and storytelling, this was one of my favorite shows.
