Blue Stockings

Promethean Theatre Ensemble

By Jessica Swale

Roles: Miss Bott/Mrs. Lindley

Blue Stockings is a moving, comical, and eye-opening story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage. Set in Cambridge in 1896, Girton College, home to the country’s first female students, is an object of annoyance and derision to the rest of the university. The year’s intake of new women face economic difficulty, the distractions of men and radical politics, and the jaw-dropping prejudice that blights every aspect of academic life. Meanwhile, there looms the prospect of a controversial vote to decide if these ‘blue stockings’ should be allowed to graduate. Written by Jessica Swale. Performances of Blue Stockings will take place at The Den Theatre, 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave.

about the project

grand ensemble

Working with an ensemble of 15 actors playing 23 characters with multiple British dialects seemed like a daunting task – but in the hands of our energetic and inspired director, Spenser Davis, we were immediately embraced by a world that was equally funny and frightening.
